Suitable for beginners to intermediates, this course from dot-art will teach you the fundamentals you will need to create your own illustrated characters or depict others in cartoon form.

Your tutor will introduce some examples of his previous work and what you will be working towards. Explore various styles and uses of comic drawing such as creating characters, avatars, designs, logo designs, product packaging, advertising, publishing (be it in books or specifically comic strips , animation storyboards and more!

Cartooning can also be funny, serious, bizarre and is a simple way to communicate.

We will do live drawing, covering basic figure drawing using a simple pose, geometric shapes and doodles. We will then look at how to add animation, with techniques like wizz lines and sound effects.

Frame content is also covered to show you how posing and composition can be used to add a dramatic or humourous effect. Finally we will work on appropriate backgrounds to a cartoon.

Tutor: Stu Harrison

Stu has been a cartoonist and illustrator for 30 years and has a number of various artwork styles appropriate to various ages and to varied job. Stu has worked for clients such as Nike, My Little Pony, Transformers, Kellogg’s, Oxford University Press, The BBC, Tescos, Marks and Spencers and many more. He has worked on comic strips, children’s picture books, animation, product design, packaging and illustration.


You will need to bring your own materials with you. Essentials include a set of HB pencils of varying softness, an A3 pad of paper, sharpener, eraser, fine-line pen and a ruler.
