The unit was the former studio of Tyson Smith, a renowned Liverpool sculptor whose public works included war memorials and notable reliefs on the St George's Plateau cenotaph. Tyson was a founding member of the Sandon Studios Society, an arts group at the Bluecoat established by a group of students in 1907, which was instrumental in transforming the building into the UK's first arts centre.
