Philip Jeck

Philip Jeck (1952 - 2022) was a multi-media artist, working with sound, film, and installation. Creating sound with record players since the early 1980’s, Jeck has worked with numerous dance and theatre companies and released eleven solo albums. His work is represented by Touch Records.

Jeck has worked with the Bluecoat for many years, and most recently he was involved with our project Where the Arts Belong, the work from which has been showcased in an exhibition. Sadly, Jeck passed away a few weeks after we opened the exhibition but we are honoured and grateful that his work is in our gallery once more.

A blog charting his life, work and relationship with the Bluecoat has been written by our Director of Cultural legacies Bryan Biggs.

Where the Arts Belong: Making Sense of it All

Jeck was among a group of leading artists involved with our Where the Arts Belong project which involves the artists working creatively with people living with dementia. Bluecoat's exhibition Where the Arts Belong: Making Sense (Of It All) showcases the work the artists created during and as a result of their time involved with the project so far.

Jeck worked collaboratively with many of the artists from the project on a variety of pieces, including a beautiful film with dance artist Mary Prestidge which included footage from Prestidge's movement workshops with Belong residents. As people living with dementia can sometimes be shocked to see themselves as older, the footage focused on the hands of the residents instead of their faces.
