Wood engraving showing the bomb-damaged Bluecoat and garden

1945

Neville Bertram trained under Bluecoat sculptor Herbert Tyson Smith, becoming a stone carver and teacher. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and some of his works can be seen in St Nicholas' Church, Liverpool. The view in this print, which he and his wife Danaë sent as a Christmas 1945 and New Year card, was drawn from Tyson Smith’s studio, the composition showing the overgrown Bluecoat yard and main block, which had been damaged in the May blitz during the Second World War.
