These images by Alan Dunn capture the Lounge's afternoon visit to Hilbre Island in the Dee estuary, reached on foot from West Kirby, which Lowry mentions in Under the Volcano. On arrival, Dominic Wilkinson, Principal Lecturer in architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, introduced a project he is leading to bring a group of semi-derelict buildings on the island back to life as a sustainable creative centre. At the Buoymaster's workshop Helen Tookey read from a text she'd recently written on a previous visit to Hilbre reflecting on Lowry's (mis)conception of a windmill - 'like a curious black flower' - on the island.
