The 2022 Lowry Lounge: Hear Us O Lord... presentation

2022

Alan Dunn presented his interdisciplinary research project, Hear Us O Lord From Heaven Thy Dwelling Place, that reimagines Lowry through the climate crisis. This involved documentation of three ferry sailings from Liverpool to the Isle of Man, Lowry's childhood holiday idyll, which attained mythical status in his writing as an imagined arcadia.

The trips to the island were made by a group of artists, writers, sound recordists, mariners and others, resulting in new creative material and thinking connecting Lowry’s prescient writing about nature with current environmental concerns, particularly over plastic pollution of the ocean.

See here for more on this project.

For this Lounge presentation, the project's findings were presented by some of those involved: poet Roger Cliffe-Thompson, a semaphore performance by the Art Doctors, and Leeds Beckett University Fine Art students Kristina Nenova and Frankie Mazzotta's artists' book, alongside readings from Lowry’s own writing by Patricia Farrell, Jeremy Lowry, Robert Sheppard and Manx-born artist Cian Quayle who also talked about his art practice drawing on Lowry’s connections to the island.

A concluding discussion drew together the enquiry's various strands and explored the extent to which Lowry’s writing connects to us today.
