Recording: Relocating the Remains panel discussion

2019

This recording is of a panel discussion, Relocating the Remains: History and Representation, staged at Bluecoat on 23 October 2019. The event was in advance of publication of The Sphinx Contemplating Napoleon: Global Perspectives on Contemporary Art and Difference (Bloomsbury), an anthology of Gilane Tawadros’ writings. She was joined on the panel by artists Keith Piper and Jo Stockham in a discussion that focused on the relationship between history, representation and cultural identity through the prism of contemporary art: what impact does the past, and nostalgia for it, have on the present? How can different histories inform and transform our understanding of the present? All speakers have a long-standing relationship with Bluecoat, as artists and curators, and the event was chaired by the arts centre’s Artistic Director, Bryan Biggs.

The event was a Bluecoat collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University’s Liverpool School of Art and Design in their Luminary Lecture Series.
