A highlight of Bluecoat's 300th birthday year was its staging of Pierre Henry's Liverpool Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral. The cathedral had commissioned the musique concrète composer to create a piece, based on the Catholic mass, for the opening of the brutalist building in 1967. Unfinished at the time, the composition was reworked with a 40-speaker sound design, and performed by Henry's collaborator, Thierry Balasse, to an audience of nearly 900 people. The event was introduced by Jarvis Cocker.
