Catalogue from the Sandon Studios Society's Exhibition of Modern Art, including work by the Post-Impressionists

1911

This catalogue is from the most significant early exhibition at Bluecoat. It was a smaller version of the Post-Impressionist exhibition curated by artist, critic and writer Roger Fry the previous Autumn in London, where it had caused a sensation. There, it had featured work by Manet, probably included as a 'sweetener', however in Bluecoat - and at Dublin Arts Club where it was shown prior to coming to Liverpool - only the 'new art' from the Continent was shown - including works by Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne and Van Gogh. Significantly, the Bluecoat exhibition provided the first opportunity to see contemporary British art - by mainly Liverpool artists - and Post-Impressionism together. The Walker Art Gallery recreated, as far as was possible, the 1911 show a century later. Catalogue courtesy of Liverpool Record Office, Liverpool Libraries, reference: 706.5 CAT.
