C. Neville Bertram, untitled wood engraving showing the bomb-damaged Bluecoat and garden

1945

Charles Neville Bertram trained under Bluecoat sculptor Herbert Tyson Smith, becoming a stone carver and teacher. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and some of his works can be seen in St Nicholas' Church, Liverpool. This print, which he and his wife Danaë sent as a 1945 Christmas and New Year card, was drawn from Tyson Smith’s studio, the composition showing the overgrown Bluecoat yard and main block, damaged in the Second World War.
