Artist in the Bluecoat yard, holding a maquette for a traffic pylon sculpture
1930
The work under construction is the crowning sculpture for a traffic pylon located at the bottom of Bold Street, Liverpool, designed by architects Holford and Stephenson for the Railway Centenary celebrations of 1930. The figure standing next to it, holding the maquette, is probably Edmund Capstick, who worked for sculptor Tyson Smith in his Bluecoat studio. A table lamp made by Bluecoat cabinet maker William Burden, based on the pylon design, was presented to Head of the University of Liverpool's School of Architecture on his retirement in 1933.
